From the Series "888" №11

Maria Kulikovska+Uleg Vinnichenko [MKUV Studio]
Original watercolor painting from the Series "888" on a found old paper (from USSR period) for architectural drawings.

The name of the series is associated with the symbolism of the number "8", which constantly surrounds from the artist's birth in year 1988 [9+1=0, 9-1=8], as well as numerology of her name and mythology, which constantly is in the present in the life of artist since March 18, 2014. When Maria started to paint her new series "888" of 888 mutated, destroyed, dancing, bleeding bodies, she already decided for herself about the title. After few days from the start of this series she began to feel very lonely and sad, she wanted to check: how long the distance from her body, where she is painting, at her home in Kyiv to her lost home in the occupied territory in Crimea. She opened the Google Maps and discovered, there are exactly 888 km away from her lost home to her body.

Maria Kulikovska is an Ukrainian-Swedish multimedia artist, architect, actionist-performer, researcher and lecturer in exile. She was born and grew up in Kerch on the edge of the Crimea peninsula, where she cannot return since the illegal annexation of the peninsula by Russia. The artist explores the transformation of her own body, watches the vulnerability of her body, and actively creates preconditions for feminist and queer discourses. Creativity of Maria Kulikovska is a radical combination of performances and sculptures, watercolors and old papers, physicality and substance, destruction and creation, complex symbols and understandable metaphors, powerlessness of screaming and power of material, weakness or careful and total.
