Watercolor Drawing on the Paper, Received from Migration Offices №...29

Maria Kulikovska+Uleg Vinnichenko [MKUV Studio]
The original watercolor painting from the on-going series of drawings on the papers, received by artist from different migration and bureaucracy offices. As Maria said, for her these drawings are her own metaphorical answers to all borders in the world, and she will paint her "answers" that long, as borders will exist:
"The human body becomes political, even without its consent. At least, the record that I was born, raised, and lived in the Crimea is now very politicized. And it's been going on since spring 2014. And every time the regular questions: "Who are you? Where are you from?" - are the most difficult and provocative questions. Despite the fact that I have always represented Ukraine and radically defended its interests at the international level, and inside my country I felt abandoned and unprotected. Very often I faced rejection for my queerness and bisexuality..."

Maria Kulikovska is an Ukrainian-Swedish multimedia artist, architect, actionist-performer, researcher and lecturer in exile. She was born and grew up in Kerch on the edge of the Crimea peninsula, where she cannot return since the illegal annexation of the peninsula by Russia. The artist explores the transformation of her own body, watches the vulnerability of her body, and actively creates preconditions for feminist and queer discourses. Creativity of Maria Kulikovska is a radical combination of performances and sculptures, watercolors and old papers, physicality and substance, destruction and creation, complex symbols and understandable metaphors, powerlessness of screaming and power of material, weakness or careful and total.
